Writer Gears Are Rusty But They Are Turning

Standard

With October around the corner, there’s a lot on my mind. I love fall and all that comes with it. And usually part of that is prepping for NaNoWriMo.

Until yesterday, I didn’t even know if I was going to do it or not. None of my recent ideas or projects I wanted to start interested me. With the wedding officially less then a year, I have a lot to do and get done for it. I feel stressed, and NaNo is for sure an added stress and time bandit.

I was at work, cleaning up and the like when all of a sudden an idea hit me. Something fun. Something I think I can get really creative with. And it excited me!

I haven’t written a heck of a lot this year. I’ve had personal issues and a lot has been put on the back burner. It made me sad that my ‘writer brain’ was sitting, getting rusty, and I wondered if I would ever use it again.

Right away I scribbled a few notes down before my next client came in. I don’t have a whole lot planned out, not even a full skeleton. But I have something to start with. A basic idea and two characters. That’s enough for me to get into my novel prep!

Over the next few days and over the coarse of October, I will build and create my main characters, and do some world building. I will work on character sketches, create a story board on Pinterest, a ‘Novel Bible’, and do a lot of brainstorming.

So, fellow writers, have you decided if you are taking part in NaNoWriMo? If so, do you have an inkling as to what you’re writing about, or still in “maybe I will just wing it” mode? Do tell! ๐Ÿ™‚

Plots for NaNoWriMo

Standard

I thought this was a great read. And with Nanowrimo on the way, it is a great help to me and hopefully other writers!

To sum up what Iโ€™ve been doing on my blog for the last two weeks: NaNoWriMo is coming, and I tend to get a little over-excited about it. In the past, Iโ€™ve talked to people who were interested in participating, but didnโ€™t think theyโ€™d know what to write (amongst other problems, like lack of time). Since Iโ€™ve struggled with the worry of writing without an idea that came to me well in advance, I thought I might be able to help others with that issue.

To me, the best way to start is by generating various ideas using prompts of various fashions. I shared some of my own, but there are so many out there to be found online. Here are mine: Story Seeds 1, Story Seeds 2, Story Seeds 3, Story Seeds 4

Now itโ€™s time to begin to develop the plot. I will beโ€ฆ

Happy Autumn!!

Standard

Today is the first day of my favorite season!

I love everything about the fall. Autumn is full of all sorts of good stuff. Including my favorite month of the year, which is just a few days away!

I’m making plans for blog posts for during October. If I have it my way, there will be lots. With Thanksgiving, prepping for Halloween and even NanoWriMo, there’s lots to do and write about.

What is your favorite thing about autumn? ๐Ÿ™‚

Fan Mail: Recent Successes!!!

Standard

With everything that has been going on lately, I have totally forgotten about my fan mail.

Back in July, Mister and I decided that we would make August our best writing month yet. Last year in July, we wrote 67 letters in one month. I said we needed to beat that! (Chalk that ambition up to the sun finally emerging and me getting an overdose of vitamin D, lol.)

So, in August we ended up writing 69 letters between us. I think he wrote more then me BUT I wrote a huge chunk. I would come home from work after a busy day, tired, and he would ask “So, who are you writing tonight?” My reply was zombie-like with an “uuughhhgg”.

However, the work paid off! We have already gotten successes from our August writing, and others from older letters. i have been pretty pumped with my new autographs!

auto flash

Grant from ‘The Flash’.

I also wrote to another cast member from ‘The Flash’. Robbie Amell was awesome enough to sign my pic!

“FireStorm”

I have gotten hooked on ‘Once Upon A Time’. I did watch season one and then for some reason wasn’t able to watch much of season two and nothing from then on. However I am quickly catching up and writing to some of the cast!

auto charming

Josh Dallas plays David/Prince Charming.

I sent two pics to him and he signed both! ๐Ÿ™‚

I was stoked to get this cast member the other day!!!

I loved her on ‘House’ and now I love her as ‘Emma Swan’.

I also wrote to a couple of classy ladies. Women I have watched in re-runs when I was a kid. I loved them then and I love them now.

Carol Burnett.

And the other classy and sassy lady is….

I just had to write to these guys.

And not to mention this awesome guy…

auto 8

John Travolta!!!

When you write to John Travolta, he will send you an extra autographed pic! Here it is:

The extra pic he sent. So cool!

I also wrote to some kick ass ladies. This autograph had me “squeeeeeeeeing” all the way out of the post office. One of my all time fave actresses!

auto melissa

Melissa McCarthy in ‘The Heat’ (which was frickin hilarious!)

My fave female vampire…

auto pam

Kristen Bauer Van Straten as ‘Pam’ in True Blood’.

And last but not least, a fab actress who I loved in ‘Chuck’ as well as Dexter.

auto

Yvonne Strahovski.

Wow! I didn’t realize how many I had come in since the last autographs I posted.

I love writing fan mail. And I love the thrill when I get an autograph in the mail. There are the odd ‘return to sender’ for various reasons, such as an outdated address, but that kind of things is rare in our mailbox (luckily!).

Until next time, happy writing! ๐Ÿ™‚ (Or whatever makes your geek heart happy!)

CaperCon 2015!

Standard

There isn’t a whole lot in my community that caters to geeks. Here in Cape Breton, there isn’t too much big or exciting that usually happens. It has only been in the last few years that big name bands have started to venture our way.

The closest convention to where I live is in Halifax. Hal-Con started about six years ago I do believe. I have attended several, including the first year. I just HAD to go. I had heard about these comic cons, had wanted to go. And now one was happening close to home.

But this weekend, Cape Breton had its very own convention, aimed at gamers, anime, bookworms, sci-fi geeks, you name it! So how could I not go to a convention that was taking place a short drive away?!

CaperCon took place Sept. 11th-13th. I had to miss the first day but luckily I got there Saturday, and decided to go again on Sunday.

I arrived a bit early on Saturday. I was traveling with Sherry, who was a guest at the con!

I helped with some setting up. I got the table ready for the Third Person Press girls.

During the coarse of the weekend, I went to some fantastic panels, which is something I don’t get to do much of (or at all) at the bigger conventions. I went to two writing panels put on by Sherry. I also went to Fanfiction 101 as well as two other fanfic panels. I missed the Batman V.S. Captain America debate. Bummer! Oh well, next time!

Sherry Ramsey had her book launch so I bought her two latest novels. ‘The Seventh Crow’ as well as her sequel to ‘One’s Aspect of The Sun’, titled ‘Dark Beneathย The Moon’. I hit up her signing and had both autographed, of course!

I also had lots of time to go through the vendor area and artists.

People having fun spending some money! ๐Ÿ™‚

I didn’t buy nearly as much as I wanted to, but I did get Mister part of his birthday gift, and a lil something for someone else. Local shops were there selling their gear. ‘Atomic Records’, ‘The Local NPC’, as well as ‘My Secret Identity’. A number of artists were there as well, and I had a lot of fun talking to some of them.

jeff

Had a great chat with artist Jeff Wilson! ๐Ÿ™‚

I also learned that Nova Scotia has a medieval society! I think that is so awesome. I wish I could remember their official name! (If you know, please comment below! ๐Ÿ™‚ ) ย I had no idea it existed and I wished they had been back on Sunday so I could have chatted with them more. The guy I was talking to was really nice and let me try on a helmet! ๐Ÿ˜€

helmets

These helmets were awesome.

The thing I love about conventions, big or small, is that no matter what they all have the same feel. Everyone is there to get their geek on. Everyone is accepted. No matter who you are or what you look like or what fandom you are dressed as, it is like one big family.

The thing I love about small cons, is that I had time to look around and go to just about everything I wanted to go to. I hung out with friends, took lots of photos of everything and of as many cosplayers as I could. I met some pretty cool people and I had fun exploring the con.

I really hope CaperCon 2016 happens. There were over 1000 people at this convention, which everyone on the committee was thrilled about. I want to thank those people for making it happen. They all did an amazing job, and I know they are hoping to do this again.

I had a blast. I do hope that if it happens next year, that the dates will be different since it would be the same date as my BIG FAT GEEK WEDDING! ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ™‚ ย But worse case scenario, I skip the gift opening Sunday and head out to the con ๐Ÿ˜‰ I think it would be fitting for the geeky newly weds to end their weekend by spending it at a convention.

Coming Soon

Standard

I just spent two kick ass days at a convention, held here locally. Our first one!!! And it went really well!!!!

As much as I want to write RIGHT NOW about all the fun that was had, I am drained and totally exhausted!!! Which is great because it is a good exhausted. I have the whole “I geeked out non-stop with people who get me” excitement.

So, I am going to go get the pj’s on and curl up. Tomorrow I will be back with an account of Caper Con!!
