My Top 3 Tips For Surviving NaNoWriMo

Standard

In just a few more days writers around the world will take to their laptops, tablets and notebooks and begin the adventure that is NaNoWriMo.

While NaNoWriMo is a month full of writing, cramped fingers, coffee and meet ups, it is a long, stressful month. And sometimes we need to remind ourselves to trudge on.

Here’s how I plan to survive November.

Take a breather.Β As important as it is to crank out that 50k, it is just as important to take time here and there to take a deep breath. Ahead of schedule? Go for a walk or spend the evening watching a movie. Behind and stressing? Take a short walk or make a coffee run to your fave cafe.

Reward yourself.Β Don’t reward yourself for every little thing, but do set some sort of reward system. Finish 500 words? Grab a piece of candy! Make the word count for the day? Go play Candy Crush. It’s the little things that help.

Get out.Β If you are able to get to write ins and Nano meet ups, go! They are fun and you get to chat to fellow writers who know all about the struggle. If you have a writers group, make sure you meet up for inspiration and motivation. Nobody around? Get online and find a writers group or hit the Nano forums.

What are your tips for surviving the month? πŸ™‚

One Week To Go

Standard

A week from today is Halloween, which means that NaNoWriMo is on the horizon. For all of us taking part, we have one full week left to plot, plan and brainstorm. To get in as many finishing touches as we need to begin what I affectionately call ‘The Month From Hell’. (Or as one of my friends call it, ‘The Month That Kerry Disappears’.)

I am panicking slightly.

Okay, I’m lying. I am panicking A LOT.

Which is normal for this time of year. I feel like I am back in highschool and a big exam is in a few days and I realized that I haven’t really even begun to study.

I’m not totally unprepared. I’m writing a dark fairy tale/fantasy. So I have a map printed off and I have gotten totally addicted to creating a little world. I have a semblance of a plot. I don’t like planning every moment because that takes the fun out of writing the actual story. I have a hero I am in love with and he is so fun to work with. He’s flawed and has an interesting backstory and has these little secrets. And he’s yet to tell them all to me.

My heroine is another story. I like her, I really do. But creating her is a bit more…work then it is to create my hero. And I still need to add touches to my world building and figure out a bit more of my actual story.

The part that worries me is my FMC, because I don’t want her feeling like a cardboard cut out the day I start writing.

How is your novel planning going? Are you all ready to go or are you panicked like I am?

A Little Writing Inspiration and A Contest

Standard

My great friend and writing buddy Sherry D. Ramsey has her own blog and writing news letter. This month she talks about Nanowrimo and she is also having a really cool little contest!

So if you want to check it all out, you can find it allΒ right here!

The contest is helping her name a character in her next Nanowrimo novel. I know I will be entering the contest, just for the hell of it! πŸ˜€

A lot of people wonder what, if anything, can be done with a Nanowrimo novel. Some people think you can’t produce anything good during the month. (It’s called editing, people. Besides, any first draft is crap).

Sherry was a guest blogger and talks about having her Nano works published, and how Nanowrimo helped her. Check out her readΒ over here.

Happy Saturday!!!

Fan Mail!

Standard

This week I was happy to find an autograph success in my mail box. I was thrilled when I opened it to see what/who I got.

keifer 1

Kiefer Sutherland as David in The Lost Boys.

I am a big fan of Kiefer Sutherland. I honestly could never get into watching ’24’, but I love so much of his other work. And he does an amazing job of playing the bad guy.

keifer 2

Kiefer in Stand By Me.

‘The Lost Boys’ and ‘Stand By Me’ are two of my all time favorite movies. So I decided to send him pics from these two movies. I am thrilled that he signed them for me.

Between sending this out and coming back, it took just over 40 days, so not too bad at all!!!

10 of My Favorite Horror Movies From The 1980’s

Standard

And in no particular order!!!

I love Halloween. And I love a good horror movie. And I love them when they aren’t so scary, too.

I’ve been in old school mode and have been re-watching some of the movies I watched growing up. So here are ten of my all time faves. (Keep in mind I am a huge movie buff and my fave list is as big as my favorite book list).

#1- A nightmare on Elm Street. I’ve been a massive Freddy Kruegar fan since I was a kid. I started watching these movies earlier then a kid should. But I grew up to be normal. Well…I wouldn’t say normal, but I could be worse. πŸ˜‰

freddy n me

Myself and Mr. C with Robert Englund!!!

#2-Fright Night. I love a good vampire movie. And this is one of my faves, including the new version.

#3- The Lost Boys. And speaking of vampires, I can’t forget this classic. The Lost Boys is a movie I (sadly) didn’t get to see until a couple of years ago. I recently wrote a fan letter to Keifer Sutherland and I really hope he signs the pic of ‘David’ that I sent.

Lost_boys

#4- My Bloody Valentine. This movie was filmed locally!!! Woot!!! I really need to sit and have a re-watch of this soon, since it has been ages. I watched the remake with Mister in our early days of dating.

#5- Critters.Β I blame my sister for getting me hooked on creature features. If they are small like these guys or as massive as Godzilla, I want to watch the movie!!!

#6. Gremlins. Who couldn’t love the lil face of Gizmo?! I would love to have a Mogwai. However, I’d make sure not to break any of the three rules.

gizmo

That face though ❀

#7- Beetlejuice. Do you know how excited I am about the sequel?!?! I am also a little terrified. Because I loved the first one so much, I am wondering how the sequel will go. It’s always a 50/50 shot of them getting it right or screwing it up. However, Tim Burton is involved soooooo odds are I’ll love it!

#8-Teen Wolf. Not exactly a horror, but I’m pretty sure it helped to fuel my love of supernatural. I used to watch this movie over and over again.

#9-Pet Semetary. Being the animal lover I am, I loved the idea of a graveyard, even a creepy one, could bring a pet back to life. But the dead should stay that way. This take on zombies is the one that creeps me out more then ‘The Walking Dead’.

#10- Maximum Overdrive. Yet another from The King of Horror on my list. Maximum overdrive was the first Stephen movie I have ever watched. I was fascinated with it. It introduced me to the world of sci-fi and horror and I wanted more. Every so often I look at my toaster and think of this movie… πŸ˜‰

maximum overdrive

And who wouldn’t be freaked the hell out seeing this coming at you?!

What are some of your favorite horror movies from this decade? πŸ™‚

Newest Autographs

Standard

I’d just like to start off by saying Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canucks. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend with family and get properly stuffed like our turkeys. πŸ™‚

We’ve been having a relaxed day. Mister C isn’t feeling the best. I went on a beautiful fall walk and stopped off at Tim’s for a pumpkin spiced donut. Yum!!!

So since he is sleeping off his cold this evening, I thought I’d pop on here.

I had two great successes this week.

coulson

Clark Gregg, aka Phil Coulson.

If you are a big fan of S.H.I.E.L.D, then you know who this guy is. Agent Phil Coulson is my favorite character on that show and I am stoked that he signed the photo I sent. (Mister is jealous since he’s yet to get his back).

I also got this one, on Friday.

finch

Micheal Emerson as Harold Finch on Person of Interest.

Mister and I have been a huge fan of this show since day one. So I was pretty happy to get this autograph.

I best go check on the future hubby, and maybe watch a scary movie! πŸ™‚

My Unique Thanksgiving Tradition

Standard

So we all (ok, a good amount of us) have the usual way of celebrating Thanksgiving. Family. Food. And turkey. Lots and lots of turkey.

My Thanksgiving tradition is a bit different. Yes, we have the turkey. And the family is around. Oh, and Mom’s pumpkin pie. Yum.

Several years ago, my family started doing something extra. We basically pack up some cars (sometimes there’s five, sometimes there’s two), with food and family and take a mini road trip. And some of us doing something that gets the attention of any tourists. Which is something I started. πŸ˜› (More on that in a bit πŸ˜› )

Since my niece is getting married this weekend (which I so can’t wait for!) some of us took our little road trip yesterday. The only downside: my cam was basically dead when we started. Boo.

I live in Cape Breton, which is home of stunning scenery, especially along the Cabot Trail. We take in some of this on our road trip.

First thing is a drive towards Kelly’s mountain and a turn off to Englishtown to catch the ferry for a two minute ride.

Almost to the other side!

Then we start stopping off at various shops. (There are a lot of artisans around here!)

sew inclined

My sister and cousin outside of Sew Inclined.

One of these stops took us to ‘Sew Inclined’. The owner makes and sells some funky, cool, and stunning hats. She let us try some on. One made us laugh, while another I really wanted to buy. The owner is a sweet, chatty lady with great talent behind her!

wildfire

We didn’t stop here this year, but when we do I love checking out the used books! πŸ™‚

We continued on and began the drive up Smokey mountain. It is a twisty drive and there is a great view of the ocean.

*NOT my pic* Here’s a pic I found of a view of the mountain. Told ya it was twisty! πŸ™‚

Pic I did take πŸ™‚ Just one view from the top of the mountain.

After our stop on Smokey, we continue to Ingonish. We found a spot that has ‘our’ tree.

Momma Fudge on the left, my sister on the right. This is ‘our’ tree. We (as in, my fam) have been taking pics here since long as I can remember.

Before the pictures we had some grub! There was some great eats, and my mom’s carrot cake was my dessert. πŸ™‚

This cozy spot had a hut, stove, and several picnic tables.

My FAVORITE part came next. The event I was looking forward to since last October. The thing we do that grabs attention from tourists.

Ingonish Beach.

See this wonderful sandy beach? See those waves? See that wooden pathway?

I ran down it, and straight into the water!!!

If you don’t live around here, then you don’t know that swimming this time of year-especially the ocean!- isn’t common.

Me heading into the water.

A tourist, a very sweet lady who was wearing a coat and scarf, laughed and said she would take a couple of photos for me while I waited for the others to change. She didn’t think my run would end with me actually getting into the water.

I LOVE this pic.

The waves were crazy awesome! Some knocked us off of our feet!

We felt so good and refreshed after our time in the water.

I enjoy watching the bundled up tourists have a laugh or looked shocked. Yesterday we were asked if we were from Alaska. Nope, we just have Cape Breton blood in our veins. πŸ˜‰

This isn’t everyone’s Thanksgiving, but it’s mine. And I wouldn’t change a thing about it. ❀

Something For My Bucket List

Standard

I have always been drawn to anything odd, weird, or creepy. I remember as a kid there was an empty house just next to mine. It was small and abandoned after the lady who lived there passed away. I remember when I was about twelve a couple of my friends and myself were curious about the place. So we snuck in (the lock was already broken, I swear!) and checked it out. We creeped ourselves out and left about fifteen minutes later.

A couple of years ago Mr. C took me for a drive and we ended up walking on foot to this old run down building that was used in the war. I really wished I had my camera on me that day and I had no idea it even existed.

I have seen photos and articles online about places around the world having abandoned places that looked really cool. Places where the Olympics were held. Massive old amusement parks. I would love to explore them one day, camera in hand.

Today I discovered an abandoned theme park. A friend of mine posted Β this article Β about a theme park in New Brunswick.

After reading it, it is now on my bucket list. I HAVE to check out this place.

I have other places like this I want to explore, which happens to be located in other countries. For the meantime though, I have a place closer to home to go explore.

What is on your bucket list?
