My Big Fat Geek Wedding

Standard

I am a bit late with my post this week. My personal goal is to post at least once a week, but when you have a migraine for a few days, your entire week goes to hell.Β I had been hoping to write another “From The Book Pile” but again, my migraine prevented me from reading. Hopefully I finish my next book by weeks end.

So, I thought this would be the perfect time Β to finally write about the best day of 2016-my wedding day. πŸ™‚

When Mr. C and I were planning, we wanted to make the day reflect us and what we love. After all, this is the one time we are doing this. So, after some talking, I came up with “Geek Chic”. And that is exactly what we had. A beautiful wedding with just the right amount of geekery added in. So if you are planning a geeky wedding, or having a unique theme, these may give you some ideas for your own big day. πŸ™‚

First I need to say that thanks to our amazing photographers, Nicole and Mike White -a husband and wife team from White Photography- we have every moment from our amazing day captured. I could never thank them enough for taking these photos, and making our day run smooth. I will cherish these for a lifetime.

My amazing comic book shoes. Made my myself and my kick ass Matron of Honor.

My Lord of The rings necklace, D20 earrings (I also had zombie earrings.)

Along with the nerdy accessories, I also had traditional. I wore my nan’s pearl necklace as a wrap around bracelet.

I loved my handbag I bought on Etsy.

Another non nerdy item…but my favorite.

img_1282

Not geeky, but very special. A heart cut from my late dad’s shirt. So his heart was next to mine on my special day.

While I wore a variety of items, Mr. C went with one theme. His awesome accessories were all Star wars.

Cuff links. Darth Vader for hubby, Boba Fett for the Best Man and Storm troopers for the groomsmen.

And yes, even their boutineer’s were Star wars. They matched their cuff links. My MoH added the Star Wars bit and my florist Trinity did the rest.

After each of us got ready (me at a B&B, him at a friends house), we did photos with our side of the wedding party before him and I met up for our first look. It was one of my favorite parts of the day. I highly recommend it. It was just the two of us and our photographers. It was intimate and romantic.

Just the two of us ❀

Our bridal party photo session was a blast. Nicole knew from the start that Mr. C and I are total nerds. She had done some ‘killer’ engagement photos for us months prior. So when she suggested to do a zombie themed photo, we were all for it. And our bridal party got in on the fun!

Zombies won’t stop us from our “I do’s!”

We got married in a local fire hall. It was an evening wedding followed by the receiving line, wine and cheese, and the reception.

All the glasses had a nerdy image. The guys all had Star Wars. ALl done by Nabella Custom Design.

Our names made from old comic books. My Matron of honor (and her family) were huge help. She made and helped with a lot for my big day.

img_2407

Geeky quotes, perfect for a wedding day. A steampunk decorated birdcage was our card holder.

img_2420

Instead of a guest book, I had stacks of books drawn up (MoH and her hubby). People signed their names on the spine. My niece surprised me with these amazing programs. It is one of my fave wedding gifts.

img_2417

My littlest bridesmaid gave me this wish jar the night before the wedding. And yes, we even had a wedding hashtag. Not many people used it but it was a great way to find photos after the big day.

I walked down the aisle to ‘A Thousand Years’ by Christina Perri. Not only do I love the song but it fit in with the movie buff side of us. (Don’t judge me for kinda liking Twilight πŸ˜‰

We did traditional vows, but we also did our version of a hand fasting/ hand fastening. With each braided ribbon that was tied around our hands, our JP had us say a line of nerdy vows. Which included, “To infinity and beyond”, “Live long and prosper”, “May the force be with you”, and “May the odds be ever in your favor”. Our guests just loved our fun and unique vows! Nobody was expecting that.

Once we were wed we walked out to Darth Vader’s Imperial March!

Pure happiness right here.

Later on, once the receiving line was finished, we walked back in to the theme song from Game of Thrones. I remember thinking “This is just how I pictured it! Just what I wanted”.

The guests had some time to check out our frickin awesome cake, made by one of my closest friends. Tanya worried I wouldn’t like it. She was right. I LOVED it!

img_2401

Thor’s hammer for a topper. She made comic book flowers to add a bridal look and put our fave symbols on the cake. This was even better (and yummier!) then I pictured. I bought a plain cake cutter and knife at Micheal’s and added comic book ‘Bam!’ and ‘Pow’ stickers to it.

Instead of having wedding favors, we did a candy buffet, so our guests could help themselves to our yummy treats. Needless to say, the entire table was a hit!

img_2399

Once we got in and settled, I had a very special Master of Ceremony join us. It isn’t every day a Jedi Master takes part in a wedding!

img_3182

Our friend did a fantastic job of this.

Instead of the traditional clinking of the glasses to get us to kiss, we had our speakers roll a D20. This is a pillow my MoH made. This is now on the sofa in my game room. I made sure nobody got it dirty! πŸ˜‰

img_2740

The rest of the night was filled with a lot of dancing and fun had by all. And just about everyone got in on the photo booth action! I had encouraged guests to cosplay or wear nerdy attire. My friends didn’t disappoint. πŸ˜‰

No matter what you plan to do on your big day, don’t let anyone stop you from doing what YOU want to do. While most of my family had no idea what to expect, they loved and enjoyed what we did. And supported it because it was what I wanted. Let your freak flag fly, my friends. Do what makes you happy.

New Year And A Fresh Start

Standard

2016 was a crazy year for me. It was a good crazy, but it took the good out of me. After my wedding I pretty much just crashed. My Big Fat Geek Wedding was nothing short of amazing.

img_2333-edit

Our day was great, even when our bridal party turned into zombies. πŸ˜‰Β

My big day was just what I wanted, and something I want to share with my fellow nerds in the near future.

Then the holidays came and we all know how hectic they can be. Between work and Christmas prep, I didn’t have much time for myself.

But 2017 is here, and I am happy to be starting fresh. And getting back to my old self, slowly but surely.

I don’t usually make new years resolutions. But I do have things I want to do this year, like tackle my many unread books, write a story that has been stuck in my head for ages, and de-clutter my house.

Whatever plans and hopes you have for 2017, I hope the year is good to you!

Geek Wedding: The Shoes

Standard

I have been excited to start making my comic book shoes for the wedding. About a month or so ago I finally found the perfect shoes to wear on the big day that I could also get crafty with.I bought a pair of black wedge heels.

This morning Β my best friend and MoH came over. And so it began! We turned off our writer brain and tapped into the crafty side.

comic book shoes 1

The starting process.

We started by cutting thin strips and used Modge Podge to glue it down and seal it. Some strips we cut worked out perfectly. I especially liked the ‘Ha Ha!’ seen here.

comic book shoes 2

The right sides of the shoes. We worked on one each, helping each other as we went. (Ok, more like I needed the help πŸ˜› )

We then cut out scenes and pictures to fill in the black space. Once finished, we used more Modge Podge to seal it. A thin coat is all that was needed (so far).

Excuse the messy table. Crafts aren’t exactly neat endeavors. πŸ˜‰

While they are pretty much a finished shoe, we just need to cut out some small images and wording like ‘Bam!’ and I have a ‘KaPow!’ somewhere too. We will add those, then give the shoes one or two more coats of the Modge Podge.

We had a lot of fun making these. My wedding shoes have Rocket, a wookie, Superman and more!!! πŸ˜€

My Newest (and most favorite!) Star Wars Item

Standard

It’s been a little hectic here in my part of the world. Work has been very busy (now I can buy groceries- yay! πŸ˜‰ ) and I have little time to myself. At the end of the day I am too tired to do very much, so projects, letters and reading have gone to the side for now.

I am however, slowly getting some things done for the wedding next year. So far there’s zombies, storm troopers, and super heroes incorporated.

I have been able to write the occasional piece of fan mail. A few weeks ago I wrote to one of my favorite kick ass women.

carrie fisher

Princess Leia. Bam!

When I wrote to Carrie Fisher, I had no idea if I would get a response and I figured it I did it would take a long time. But just over twenty days later I got this in the mail, so I am pretty stoked.

It’s almost TGIF, and I am celebrating a bit early. I am heading out for some good pub food with Mr. C and some friends shortly. Then I plan to sleep, work tomorrow. and sleep a part of my weekend away.

I hope your summer is going great and you are having lots of fun! πŸ™‚

Custom Comix offers comic book accessories and gifts for every geeky wedding need

Standard

It’s been a bit of an off week for me, so I am spending this sunny and beautiful Saturday doing a few things that make me happy. I have already been on my morning walk, which was great. It’s a warm autumn day and the walk got my ‘writing brain’ going, so I came home with a new idea or two.

Now I am checking in on my fave wedding website, and they had a post that made this geeky chick very happy. I have now discovered a new geeky Etsy shop (I LOVE Etsy…I have found so many cute and awesome things for myself and for friends). So now I will explore it a bit more, and spend a bit of time hoarding some new ideas and maybe order an item or two.

I thought I would share the link for my fellow geeks. I hope that this Saturday finds you well and happy πŸ˜€

Planning My Big Geek Chic Wedding

Standard

Not only am I excited about my future nuptials, but our friends seem to be as well. Why? Because they know it won’t be a traditional wedding, that this event will reflect us in many ways. One told me “I am totally expecting you to ‘out geek’ my friend so and so’s wedding”. A groomsman has been bragging, apparently, and said it will be “The wedding of the century.” But no pressure, right?

The entire event (wedding, wine and cheese, and dance) will take place in a hall. Since Mr. C and I have many interests and hobbies, I want to include as much as I can instead of picking just one geeky thing.Β I am a HUGE bookworm. We both love Star Wars, video games, comic cons, comic books, and more. As far as TV goes, we are MASSIVE fans of Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and Sons of Anarchy. (And yes, if I can get something SOA related into the day, I will do it! He got me hooked after we started dating, and we always watch the episodes with each other.) So since I have been brainstorming some ideas, I thought I would share, in case other geeks in love are looking for some ideas.

The Cake: I think going with a white cake with some flare is traditional yet fun. Our cake will be an inspiration from ‘The Corpse Bride.’ Our colors are black, pale blue and medium blue so the designs will be black and the cake itself a medium blue. I might see about having figures around the cake, if I can find small ones in the toy section of Walmart.

The Cake Topper: Not 100% sure, but right now either a ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ topper, or a couple playing video games. There are so many fun toppers out there. From Etsy, to Amazon and Ebay, there’s many styles of toppers the soon-to-be newlyweds will love. My problem: too many to pick from!

Geeky Decor:Β My sister gave me a fab idea, and I plan to make it work. She suggested a large, 3D item, standing close to the cake. It would look cool in photos and give something for guests to talk about. If we were Doctor Who fans, a Tardis would be perfect. We will have to sit down, think of some of our fandoms, and come up with an idea or two. If only there was a Batmobile in town…

The invites: This is where I wish I could have several different styles, just because I can’t pick! We have it narrowed down to two choices. 1-A comic book cover. There are some different sites that will customize these. 2-(my personal fave!) a couple fighting zombies. I especially love the “To death do us part”, written on the top. I can only imagine what our mother’s will say and think when they see these. Props to illustrator, Β Manuel Morgado.

Zombie-Wedding-Invitation

The Tables:Β While each table will be elegant, thanks to my decorator, I will be adding my own twist!! Each table will have a theme. If we do a seating plan, each table will have a name of a famous book couple or duo, instead of a number. So if you happen to be seated at the Batman And Robin table, there will be black and gold glitter, and the famous Bat signal. Originally we were going to have a friend make wine, and have our own geeky labels put onto them. Each table would have Β wine bottles to match the theme they were sitting at. Unfortunately, I found out today that the hall doesn’t allow homemade wine. Boo-urns 😦

The Candy bar:Β This will double as a fun extra as well as our favors. My friends and I plan to make up some fun, geeky names to go with certain candies. The goodie bags will be placed at the tables, and the guests can treat themselves to whichever candies they want! Since we are having a September wedding, Halloween candy will already be out, so I might luck out and find something extra special, instead of renaming the classics for a night πŸ˜‰

The Photo Booth:Β Our fab photographers will do a photo booth at the reception. If you have ever been a part of one, you know how fun this can be. If you haven’t, the concept is simple: A sheet is used for a back drop, and props are provided. From feather boas to hats; from fake martini glasses and plastic guns. You throw some gear on, and smile for the birdie πŸ˜‰ My bridesmaids and MoH (aka my minions) are going to help make/buy some geeky extras. Once Halloween props and costumes go on sale, I want to grab some capes and masks.

The best part of planning my wedding, is all the fun I’m having! For now at least. I still have two years to go, so stress level isn’t high at the moment. I want this day to reflect us, and be what we want. This is after all, our big day.

Are you having a geek theme wedding? What are your ideas and plans? I would love to hear your thoughts! πŸ˜€
