Pen Pals and A Journal Swap

Standard

I have loved writing snail mail since I was a kid. And it is a passion that never died for me.

Over the last few years I got involved on online pen pal groups. I have been really lucky to make a few true friends. I have taken part in swaps and exchanges, but have been burned on several occasions.A friend of mine, originally from the USA but currently living in The Netherlands, had the same experience. So we decided that since we are friends and trust each other, we would do our own swap!

The both of us LOVE the fall. I suggested an October themed journal. We both spent the month of October working on our projects for each other. The beginning of November we both sent off our swap and crossed our fingers that they would each arrive safe and sound.

Last Friday she got hers in the mail, and yesterday I got mine! πŸ™‚

My October themed journal. πŸ™‚

I was thrilled when I got home and seen the big package on my table. I opened it right away.

The both of us put in a lot of work and effort and made ‘fat’ journals.

I loved reading everything and looking at the photos. The both of us put a lot of work into it. She wrote about some of her memories, Thanksgiving recipes, Halloween ideas and fun crafts. I loved reading about the local legends from her home town and also reading about her trip to Romania. (I am super jealous she got to see Dracula’s castle! But also so happy for her!)

I love how she put the pages together. On some she drew, wrote out poems, memories, and more. It gave me ideas how I could do another journal down the road.

We are talking about doing another one next year, maybe a Halloween one since it is something we love and something I could get creative with. I am already thinking of local ghost stories to tell her.

One thing I love about pen palling, is learning about other people’s traditions and stories. I am thrilled we did this and I look forward to doing them again down the road. πŸ™‚

Author Autograph Success!!!!

Standard

I have been writing fan mail to actors for at least a year and a half now. And I have gotten some great replies.Β Once in a while Mr. C is able to find an address for one of my favorite authors.

When we first started printing off photos to send, he started making custom cards. One of these was sent to author Jodi Picoult and I was stoked to get that back signed by her.

Today I went to the mailbox, and there was an envelope for me. I knew it was an auto since it was one of the SASE* I included in a letter, but I had no idea who. I could tell it was an older one. One of the first letters I had written.

I was a very happy chick when I opened it.

author auto charlaine

Charlaine Harris!

I got hooked on the Sookie Stackhouse books years and years ago. WAY before True Blood ever hit the small screen. I was hooked on them and ate up every book that was out. When I got caught up, I kept an eye out for release dates. I would buy the hardcover, because I was way too impatient to wait until it was printed in soft cover.

So when we started writing fan mail, she was one on my list. I love her novels and I had to write her. So I was thrilled today to get this. It took 418 days to get here. It was worth the wait!!! πŸ™‚

My Newest (and most favorite!) Star Wars Item

Standard

It’s been a little hectic here in my part of the world. Work has been very busy (now I can buy groceries- yay! πŸ˜‰ ) and I have little time to myself. At the end of the day I am too tired to do very much, so projects, letters and reading have gone to the side for now.

I am however, slowly getting some things done for the wedding next year. So far there’s zombies, storm troopers, and super heroes incorporated.

I have been able to write the occasional piece of fan mail. A few weeks ago I wrote to one of my favorite kick ass women.

carrie fisher

Princess Leia. Bam!

When I wrote to Carrie Fisher, I had no idea if I would get a response and I figured it I did it would take a long time. But just over twenty days later I got this in the mail, so I am pretty stoked.

It’s almost TGIF, and I am celebrating a bit early. I am heading out for some good pub food with Mr. C and some friends shortly. Then I plan to sleep, work tomorrow. and sleep a part of my weekend away.

I hope your summer is going great and you are having lots of fun! πŸ™‚

Incoming: Geek Mail!

Standard

One thing I love about penpalling, is making some great connections with people. I especially love creating new geeky friendships, like the one I have withΒ Shannon! πŸ™‚

Awhile back, we decided to do a mail swap. Since we have been writing to each other for awhile, I knew quickly that she’s good people, and I could trust her. And since she trusted me, we knew we wouldn’t get burned.

We are both big geeks and went with a fandom themed swap, and set the limit at $25. Which was hard since I wanted to buy her ALL THE THINGS.

Missing from the picture is a leather bracelet stamped with the phrase ''Bow ties are cool''. Guess which fandom? :P

This is most of what I sent Shannon for her swap. πŸ™‚ (Not in pic is a Doctor Who themed bracelet).

She loved what I sent, and today I received her swap! Which made me squeeeeeee! I am very pumped and love all that she sent! πŸ™‚

The first thing I opened were these lil beauties.

IMG-20150708-01613

Superman stickers and an Avengers projector pen!

And like the kid that I am, it didn’t take long for me to put on a light show.

IMG-20150708-01612

Avengers! I have a feeling I won’t get much writing done when using this pen! πŸ˜›

I pretty much mini freaked when I opened the next bit.

IMG-20150708-01616

I have loved Superman since I was itty bitty.

It’s a bit hard to tell in this pic, but those are Batman and Superman earrings. (Which might just end up being the earrings I wear next year for our big fat geek wedding!!! πŸ˜€ ) Also, Superman deco tape, which will be put to use this weekend when I sit to write some letters.

IMG-20150708-01615

Game of Thrones goodies.

And the spoiling continues. I am in love with these bookmarks and necklace from GoT. I am thinking Khal Drogo needs to go in my next book.

IMG-20150708-01614

Thor keychain and Lord of The Rings inspired earrings.

Thor’s hammer is about to go onto my key chain, next to my mini Jon Snow. And I giggled when I opened these earrings. I have been eyeing them up for awhile!! πŸ˜›

I am beyond happy with my swap and thrilled she loved hers as well. I also got a lovely letter as well, which I plan to reply to on the weekend. (As well as a couple of other letters I need to get to! Don’t worry peeps, I didn’t for get you! ^_^ )

After a very long day and a couple of more ahead of me, coming home to this package on my table was a great pick me up. πŸ™‚ Thank you again, Shannon!!!!! xoxoxo

Mail Call From Across The Globe

Standard

Imagine my surprise when I dropped into my post office this afternoon to find this waiting for me.

IMG-20150622-01594

A massive package from Australia and a fab letter from Quebec.

I have been pen pals with my girl Jess for….longer than I can remember.

And whenever we are able, we send each other Christmas and birthday gifts. Sometimes, like this year, we are late with our exchange. But nothing like getting a nice surprise in June!

IMG-20150622-01596

This right here means the world to me. These words say it all. My best friend is on the other side of the world but that doesn’t matter to us. (Sucks sometimes though!)

Even though we live far apart, we have a fantastic friendship. It is amazing how close you can become with someone when distance is a factor.

We have gotten to know each other very well. And she knows all my loves and obsessions, including my massive and unnatural love for Halloween. πŸ˜‰

IMG-20150622-01597

Halloween cupcake tray, candles, and a wooden sign.

I also received a fab letter from a Canadian pal of mine. πŸ™‚ I love the mail art and as a bonus she sent me geeky business cards for my collection!

Letter and business cards.

I love getting mail and this was more then I ever expected! Very grateful for the friendships I have. πŸ™‚

Playing Catch Up With Snail Mail

Standard

When I am going through a rough patch, I barely touch my letter pile. It has zero to do with my friends and everything to do with the fact I just can’t get into it. Even though I really want to.

So I gathered my mail last night and took my lovely letters to work with me. I was able to get one written and I plan to catch up on the older ones over the weekend.

IMG-20150604-01554

Letters from around the globe.

My letters, currently, are from Canada, the USA, The Netherlands and Australia.

I am very lucky to have great friends who understand that sometimes my letters have to go on the backburner for a little while. I hope that I don’t have a dry spell that long again for a long time.

For those of you who write letters, how many are in your mail pile? Where are they all from? πŸ™‚

Snail Mail, Old Man Winter and My Currently Off Kilter Life

Standard

I feel like I should start off with an apology.

My life the last two months has been very up and down, and my inner timeline is messed up. Every time I think of a post that ‘needs’ to be written, my next thought is “Oh, that should have been last week.”

Like my Month of Letters in February. I wasn’t the best at keeping up with updates and fun mail.

I’ve got a few ideas rolling in my head that center around the writing life, books and other geekery, I just haven’t had the mental energy or brain cells to remember to write them up.

I’ve had my mom on my mind for the last week or so especially. She had a surgery (all went well!) but of coarse, the worry and stress took up a good 90% of my brain.

The winter and I don’t exactly see eye to eye, either. And with the shit show that has nailed us here on the east coast, it makes me want to hibernate with books, video games, and Storm Chips. (Because, every snow storm needs some salty goodness to get you through it.)

I’ve had a few shining moments in the last week or so. My newest autograph showed up in the mail.

john

John Lithgow in one of my all time fave movies, ‘Harry and the Hendersons.’

I was pretty stoked the day I opened this. I have been a huge John Lithgow fan for years.

I also had another ‘celeb’ pop up in my mail box when I got another fab letter from Shannon.

IMG-20150305-00756

Captain America was joined by two other Avengers. #Snail Mail Win

I also got two late Valentines, which was a sweet surprise. Mel and Sarah both sent me one. The one from Mel is currently missing in my paper pile (If you are reading this, thank you and no rush with a letter. ❀ ) And this one is from Sarah in the USA.

IMG-20150303-00752

Snail mail Valentine. Too cute eh?

So, I promise I will get properly on track as soon as I can. Right now Momma Bear comes first on my list and also in my head.

In the meantime, when I am not re-blogging other cool posts or making a quick stop in, I’m making a list of ideas for future ramblings.

I hope you’re surviving the winter. And don’t forget the Storm Chips! πŸ˜‰
