New Year And A Fresh Start

2016 was a crazy year for me. It was a good crazy, but it took the good out of me. After my wedding I pretty much just crashed. My Big Fat Geek Wedding was nothing short of amazing.

Our day was great, even when our bridal party turned into zombies. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย

My big day was just what I wanted, and something I want to share with my fellow nerds in the near future.

Then the holidays came and we all know how hectic they can be. Between work and Christmas prep, I didn’t have much time for myself.

But 2017 is here, and I am happy to be starting fresh. And getting back to my old self, slowly but surely.

I don’t usually make new years resolutions. But I do have things I want to do this year, like tackle my many unread books, write a story that has been stuck in my head for ages, and de-clutter my house.

Whatever plans and hopes you have for 2017, I hope the year is good to you!

Fan Mail Friday

Happy New Year everyone!!! I hope that you all had a great night and aren’t suffering too badly from hangovers- both from the liquid and food variety. ๐Ÿ˜‰

One of the things that ended my year was a surprise in my mailbox!

gen goodwin

My newest to the collection.

I am a huge fan of ‘Once Upon A Time.’ And I love Ginnifer Goodwin. I thought she was awesome on ‘Big Love’ and I adore her as Snow White.

Recently another auto came my way.

Another OUAT cast member, but this time the pic is from another role.

Rose McIver as Liv Moore.

If you haven’t checked out ‘iZombie’ yet, I highly suggest to give it a go! I love the characters, the story, and the fact Liv Moore is a zombie helping to solve crime. Thanks to one of her zombie side effects.

I haven’t been able to write letters in the last couple of months. During November, my words and energy was put into my novel. And with the holidays, not much extra was getting done. But now that all of that is behind me, it is time to get the pen and paper out and start writing some letters. To pen pals and celebs.

I hope you all are getting to relax today, and enjoy the first day of 2016!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

My Newest (and most favorite!) Star Wars Item

It’s been a little hectic here in my part of the world. Work has been very busy (now I can buy groceries- yay! ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) and I have little time to myself. At the end of the day I am too tired to do very much, so projects, letters and reading have gone to the side for now.

I am however, slowly getting some things done for the wedding next year. So far there’s zombies, storm troopers, and super heroes incorporated.

I have been able to write the occasional piece of fan mail. A few weeks ago I wrote to one of my favorite kick ass women.

carrie fisher

Princess Leia. Bam!

When I wrote to Carrie Fisher, I had no idea if I would get a response and I figured it I did it would take a long time. But just over twenty days later I got this in the mail, so I am pretty stoked.

It’s almost TGIF, and I am celebrating a bit early. I am heading out for some good pub food with Mr. C and some friends shortly. Then I plan to sleep, work tomorrow. and sleep a part of my weekend away.

I hope your summer is going great and you are having lots of fun! ๐Ÿ™‚

Book Review: The Laughing Corpse

Yesterday I finished reading ‘The Laughing Corpse’, book two in the ‘Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter’ series by Laurell K. Hamilton.

The Book Jacket:

Harold Gaynor offers Anita Blake a million dollars to raise a 300-year-old zombie. Knowing it means a human sacrifice will be necessary, Anita turns him down. But when dead bodies start turning up, she realizes that someone else has raised Harold’s zombie–and that the zombie is a killer. Anita pits her power against the zombie and the voodoo priestess who controls it.

In The Laughing Corpse Anita will learn that there are some secrets better left buried-and some people better off dead…

My Review:

I am a huge fan paranormal (fantasy/romance/horror/mystery) and when I read book one in the series (‘Guilty Pleasures’) I was hooked on the characters and where the story was going. If a book has vampires, zombies, witches and the like, I’m anxious to get it in my hands.

This book however…my feelings are as mixed as the other reviews I’ve read. And to be honest, it was a bit of a let down.

Just for kicks I looked online, to see how others felt about the book. The book has gotten everything from one star ratings (“TERRIBLE!” is one observation), while others have given is a five star review. (“Best book I have read,” was another thought on it.) Me? I am going to have to split the difference and give this a 3 out of 5.

There were parts of the plot that were fast paced and kept me interested. There were some great characters that came into play, like Jean-Claude, the vampire who wants Anita as his human slave. Then there is Anita herself, a strong female character who I love even though I sometimes want to slap her (her sass can come off as bitchiness, in my opinion.) Then there were the villains, my favorite being Dominga Salvador, a strong voodoo priestess. I would have liked to see more of her and what she could do, but I guess when you can have zombies do your dirty work, you can hide a bit.

There were parts, especially in the middle where it ran a bit long, that the plot lost some steam here and there. I’d skim along because I just didn’t care and wanted the story to “hurry up and get better.”

Also, when you are reading a book about a vampire hunter, it would be nice if she, oh I don’t know, at least had more interaction with a vamp aside from getting hit on. But zombies ruled this novel so there wasn’t much time or a chance for her to deal with bad vampires.

I am totally cool with gore. Both on the big screen and in books. My main issue with the gore in this novel dealt with the death of a child. That gore I really didn’t want to read. So that’s my least fave part of the novel.

My favorite part though, was pretty effing cool. Anita is an animator, which means she can raise the dead. And she raised an entire graveyard. The earth shook as hundreds of zombies began to climb out of their grave. She put them all back of coarse, when she was ready.

This book took me months to read, so that tells you right there my interest level. When I picked it back up again a week ago I was determined to finish it. But when I love a book, I devour it pretty quickly. (Unless life gets in the way. It has a way of doing that from time to time.)

Even though this was not even close to being my favorite book and I gave it a three star rating, I will still continue to read the series. It did have an interesting plot over all with a few twists added in. I also enjoyed the first book and want to keep going.

Have you read this? If so, what are your thoughts on it? I’d also love to hear if you read other books in the series and what you thought of them.

Walkers And Autographs

*********SPOILER ALERT*********

How AWESOME was ‘The Walking Dead’ last night!? I’m sorry (well, not really) but I have to take a moment to squeeeee about last nights episode. It was the best opening episode EVER! OMG! What I love about this show is that horror isn’t always the gore or the rotting zombies. When Rick and the guys were kneeling down and watching the other men have their throats slit one by one, my hands started to sweat and I felt weak. I felt their fear. As soon as I heard the explosion I just knew who it was. (The fiance didn’t agree with me…loved how he was proved wrong! ๐Ÿ˜› ) If you are a Walking Dead fan you have watched Carol change and develop so much since season one. She went from an abused woman, too afraid to stand up for herself to this awesome fighting machine. I am so back on the Team Carol bandwagon. I wasn’t really a fan of her back in the prison, but now…I want that chick on my side during the end of the world!!! It was awesome how everything came together. How she covered herself in walker guts to blend in, rigged that explosion and went after her friends. The show started with a bang (literally!) and ended perfectly. When they were all reunited, the best parts were Rick seeing his daughter, and the way Daryl ran to Carol. (I so hope they finally hook up this season…I’m not much for shipping but those two NEED to be together! Am I right???)

One of my geeky collections is autographs. I have been pretty lucky and have gotten to meet seven of the actors (at conventions. And all worth the money I paid.) I have a couple of photos but autographs from all of them. Collecting autographs is a hobby both me and my fiance have. He has way more, and it is a more recent thing for me. There’s two ways we get them.

The first: At conventions. If I have the chance to meet a celeb but can only do an auto OR a photo op, I almost always go for the autograph. You have time for a quick chat, unlike during the photo sessions. From ‘The Walking Dead’ I have met Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohen, Steven Yeun, Danai Gurira, Laurie Holden, David Morrisey and Micheal Rooker. (To all the fans of Daryl Dixon, Norman is a pretty sweet and cool guys and gives pretty great hugs ๐Ÿ˜› )

The second: Through the mail. Years ago I wrote to celebs with little luck. Mr.C on the other hand had lots of luck. This year we both decided to start writing again, just for the hell of it. He has had many successes, but he has also written to a lot more people then me so far. There’s a few websites you can hit up. Some are free, while others have a small fee, like (which is what we now use). The best way to get a result is to send a self addressed stamp envelope with a photo you want signed. Sometimes an actor may return your item unsigned but will enclose a pre-print photo. Sometimes you will have no luck at all. And when you do get lucky, you have your photo sent back signed, and the odd time a small note. Greyston Holt from ‘Bitten’ wrote “thanks for the lovely letter” on the back of my photo. Mr. C recently got something from a hockey player, with a short letter inside. Here are a few that I have gotten in the mail.

As some of you may know, I love getting Happy Mail. And these always make my day! Do you collect autographs? How many are in your collection? ๐Ÿ™‚

Planning My Big Geek Chic Wedding

Not only am I excited about my future nuptials, but our friends seem to be as well. Why? Because they know it won’t be a traditional wedding, that this event will reflect us in many ways. One told me “I am totally expecting you to ‘out geek’ my friend so and so’s wedding”. A groomsman has been bragging, apparently, and said it will be “The wedding of the century.” But no pressure, right?

The entire event (wedding, wine and cheese, and dance) will take place in a hall. Since Mr. C and I have many interests and hobbies, I want to include as much as I can instead of picking just one geeky thing.ย I am a HUGE bookworm. We both love Star Wars, video games, comic cons, comic books, and more. As far as TV goes, we are MASSIVE fans of Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and Sons of Anarchy. (And yes, if I can get something SOA related into the day, I will do it! He got me hooked after we started dating, and we always watch the episodes with each other.) So since I have been brainstorming some ideas, I thought I would share, in case other geeks in love are looking for some ideas.

The Cake: I think going with a white cake with some flare is traditional yet fun. Our cake will be an inspiration from ‘The Corpse Bride.’ Our colors are black, pale blue and medium blue so the designs will be black and the cake itself a medium blue. I might see about having figures around the cake, if I can find small ones in the toy section of Walmart.

The Cake Topper: Not 100% sure, but right now either a ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ topper, or a couple playing video games. There are so many fun toppers out there. From Etsy, to Amazon and Ebay, there’s many styles of toppers the soon-to-be newlyweds will love. My problem: too many to pick from!

Geeky Decor:ย My sister gave me a fab idea, and I plan to make it work. She suggested a large, 3D item, standing close to the cake. It would look cool in photos and give something for guests to talk about. If we were Doctor Who fans, a Tardis would be perfect. We will have to sit down, think of some of our fandoms, and come up with an idea or two. If only there was a Batmobile in town…

The invites: This is where I wish I could have several different styles, just because I can’t pick! We have it narrowed down to two choices. 1-A comic book cover. There are some different sites that will customize these. 2-(my personal fave!) a couple fighting zombies. I especially love the “To death do us part”, written on the top. I can only imagine what our mother’s will say and think when they see these. Props to illustrator, ย Manuel Morgado.

The Tables:ย While each table will be elegant, thanks to my decorator, I will be adding my own twist!! Each table will have a theme. If we do a seating plan, each table will have a name of a famous book couple or duo, instead of a number. So if you happen to be seated at the Batman And Robin table, there will be black and gold glitter, and the famous Bat signal. Originally we were going to have a friend make wine, and have our own geeky labels put onto them. Each table would have ย wine bottles to match the theme they were sitting at. Unfortunately, I found out today that the hall doesn’t allow homemade wine. Boo-urns ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

The Candy bar:ย This will double as a fun extra as well as our favors. My friends and I plan to make up some fun, geeky names to go with certain candies. The goodie bags will be placed at the tables, and the guests can treat themselves to whichever candies they want! Since we are having a September wedding, Halloween candy will already be out, so I might luck out and find something extra special, instead of renaming the classics for a night ๐Ÿ˜‰

The Photo Booth:ย Our fab photographers will do a photo booth at the reception. If you have ever been a part of one, you know how fun this can be. If you haven’t, the concept is simple: A sheet is used for a back drop, and props are provided. From feather boas to hats; from fake martini glasses and plastic guns. You throw some gear on, and smile for the birdie ๐Ÿ˜‰ My bridesmaids and MoH (aka my minions) are going to help make/buy some geeky extras. Once Halloween props and costumes go on sale, I want to grab some capes and masks.

The best part of planning my wedding, is all the fun I’m having! For now at least. I still have two years to go, so stress level isn’t high at the moment. I want this day to reflect us, and be what we want. This is after all, our big day.

Are you having a geek theme wedding? What are your ideas and plans? I would love to hear your thoughts! ๐Ÿ˜€
